Harvard researchers recently completed a study that showed men who do not eat breakfast every morning are at a much higher risk for heart disease than men who do eat breakfast.
Despite the fact that our culture is constantly inundated with advertisements and articles encouraging us to eat a healthy breakfast, Huffington Post reported in 2011 that 31 million Americans choose to skip the first meal of the day! Although it was pretty common knowledge that eating breakfast is important, the Harvard study helps to show just how high the stakes are.
Discount Drug Network has assembled some tips to help make eating breakfast every morning a little bit easier.
- Prepare the night beforeBefore you go to bed at night, get your breakfast food ready. Make your trail mix ahead of time and put it with your keys, so you don’t forget it. This way, you don’t have to feel as rushed in the morning.
- What you do the night before is keyGetting a good night’s sleep is ultra important. Get into some sort of a routine to help make falling asleep easier and more refreshing for your body. Read before bed or listen to soft music to help you drift off to sleep. Avoid late night snacks, as they can make you feel more awake and can also lead to indigestion and bad dreams. Plus, you don’t want to wake up the next morning and feel too full to eat breakfast.
- Get up earlierThis may seem like a no-brainer and it may also seem like it is easier said than done, but it’s so important. Plus, even though it may feel like it is better to grab 15 minutes of extra sleep, you’ll actually feel better if you get out of bed and give your body a chance to fully wake up. Waking up and rushing out the door in 15 minutes is a sure-fire way to be tired all day, so take the extra time and allow your body to wake up naturally.
- Don’t always rely on coffeeWhile coffee does have many good benefits, it can also stain your teeth and give you gross morning breath. Plus, drinking coffee when your stomach is empty keeps you from feeling hungry at breakfast time. The point is to eat a healthy breakfast, not skip a healthy breakfast! If you insist on getting up 15 minutes before you have to leave and don’t have time to eat, at least drink a healthy, refreshing fruit smoothie instead of coffee. A smoothie is easy to make, you’ll feel full, and it is very healthy.
- Make a snack bag
Trail mix is a healthy (and colorful!) way to start your day. Trail mix is another easy grab and go breakfast that is also healthy. Throw some granola, raisins, and assorted nuts into a bag and you’re all set! If you use a resealable bag, you won’t have to rush through breakfast, either. Eat it at work or on the road for a nice snack. Best of all, making your own trail mix is pretty inexpensive and easy. Saving money is always good, right? Snack bags are a great way to ensure that you eat breakfast every morning.
- Don’t eat too muchYou want to get some food in your stomach, but you don’t want to stuff yourself. Too much of anything, even healthy food, is a bad thing. Plus, you don’t want to feel heavy and weighed down the rest of the day!
- Make breakfast time “your time”Instead of looking at getting up early as a chore, find a way to make it an enjoyable part of your day. Read a book while you eat or eat outside and enjoy the fresh air. Once you make getting up early an enjoyable habit, you won’t have any trouble doing it over and over again.
